The Trip

How it came about...

I've always wanted to go to India. My parents spent 6months travelling through it when they were in their mid 20s and their stories and photos have always captured my imagination. In early December I shot Alex a text about the idea and he was onboard too. We booked our flights for a trip of just under 2months and agreed we'd make up a plan as we went. Sorted. I set these pages up to record our experience of India!

Dharavi Slum tour with Nick from Mystical Mumbai

Our Mumbai guesthouse put us in touch with Nick from Mystical Mumbai Tours and we couldn't have been luckier. He gave us an incredible insiders look at the workings (and entrepreneurial nature) of the slums where he lives and runs a NGO amongst just about everything else you can think of!

Before we headed into the slums we stopped for India's ubiquitous, compulsory and delicious Chai. I had some questions about the scoldingly hot and ever-so-sweet beverage and as usual the conversation meandered...

This tour was nothing short of fantastic. If you haven't got time to listen to the full tour but want to jump around and find out about the various enterprises in the slum here's a rough guide of what we cover with Nick:

~3 mins - The Plastic Recycling Process

~11 mins - Metal Barrel & Can Recycling

~22 mins - The Cardboard Box Flipping Business

~23.5 mins - Talking about Slumdog Millionaire

~26.5 mins - More About Nick's NGO

~28 mins - The slum infrastructure; water & electricity

~ 31 mins - Cloth & Material Dying

~ 33 mins - The 100Kg Bar of Soap!

~ 40 mins - All Things Leather

~ 71 mins - Clay Pot Production

Munnar

On a 3 day trek around the mountains and tea plantations of Munnar, we had a lot of time to chew the fat with our fantastic guide Isaac and holidaying Italian chef Valerio. This is just a few of the many of the interesting topics we covered as we walked up, down and around the stunning hill station town.
